Are Ovulation Tests Helpful For Tracking Fertility?

Tracking your fertility is one of the best ways to increase your monthly chance of getting pregnant. A woman is fertile for a short time every month. This is her ovulation window for timing sexual intercourse. Being able to track ovulation is important and over the counter ovulation test are very good tools to help women know when they are ovulating.

Ovulation Tests

Ovulation tests are commonly available in drug stores, grocery stores, and many large retailers. Ovulation tests are ideal for those women wanting to track their basal body temperature and/or monitoring cervical fluid is unappealing or unrealistic.

  • These tests work by detecting the level of luteinizing hormone, commonly referred to as LH, in your urine.
  • Just before a woman ovulates, her body produces a greater amount of LH than it does during the rest of her cycle.
  • The ovulation tests provide a positive result once this surge is present in a woman’s urine. The surge in LH happens up to 48 hours prior to ovulation.
  • A positive result lets women know that it is time to coordinate intercourse and their ovulation to increase her chance of becoming pregnant.

Considerations When Using Ovulation Tests

In order to use the tests correctly, urine must be tested for a number of days. For women with regular cycles, targeting the right time frame to start using the tests is easier than for women with irregular cycles. These women may need additional kits as they may need to test for a longer period of time before their LH surge occurs.

Other things to keep in mind include:

  • The tests indicate the presence of an increased amount of LH a precursor to ovulation.
  • However, the test cannot confirm that an egg was released.
  • Women with hormonal issues such as PCOS can have false positive results as their hormones are outside of normal levels
  • Ovulation tests are not a replacement for diagnostic testing for fertility problems. If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months consider speaking with a fertility expert.

How to Manage Sexual Intimacy During IVF Treatment

Going through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment can put a strain on a couple’s relationship – especially sexual intimacy. Having sex during IVF treatment can help keep you connected and passionate about your relationship. Sexual relations are allowed and encouraged during IVF treatment – with some caution.

Sex During IVF Treatment

There are stages of IVF treatment when your doctor may recommend you abstain from sex. Your doctor will tell you when and if you should abstain from sex during your IVF treatment.

During Ovarian Stimulation

As part of the IVF procedure, women are administered injectable fertility medications to stimulate their ovaries into producing multiple egg follicles. Sexual intercourse is not discouraged, however, a woman may experience discomfort due to the many egg follicles she is producing in her ovaries. Her ovaries will be very tender and penile penetration may cause pain.

Having unprotected sex during ovarian stimulation can increase the chances of a multiple pregnancy, which is risky for the mother and the baby. If you do have sex during the ovarian stimulation phase of IVF treatment, it is important to use a condom.

Prior to Providing Sperm

Men should not ejaculate for at least 2 days prior to providing a semen specimen during the IVF process. However, men should ejaculate 5 to 6 days prior to abstaining. This method helps to ensure the highest possible sperm count. A sperm specimen is usually provided on the day of egg retrieval.

After Egg Retrieval

Your doctor will probably recommend that you not have sex for a period of time after egg retrieval in order to prevent any medical complications from the surgical procedure.

After Embryo Transfer

Similarly, your doctor may recommend you do not have sex for a certain period of time after the embryo transfer. This is typically not problematic because most couples are not in the mood to have sex after the egg retrieval procedure and the embryo transfer.

Once you have the go-ahead from your doctor, there is no reason to abstain from having sex. There is no evidence that orgasm prevents implantation or causes miscarriage.
