Tracking your fertility is one of the best ways to increase your monthly chance of getting pregnant. A woman is fertile for a short time every month. This is her ovulation window for timing sexual intercourse. Being able to track ovulation is important and over the counter ovulation test are very good tools to help women know when they are ovulating.
Ovulation tests are commonly available in drug stores, grocery stores, and many large retailers. Ovulation tests are ideal for those women wanting to track their basal body temperature and/or monitoring cervical fluid is unappealing or unrealistic.
- These tests work by detecting the level of luteinizing hormone, commonly referred to as LH, in your urine.
- Just before a woman ovulates, her body produces a greater amount of LH than it does during the rest of her cycle.
- The ovulation tests provide a positive result once this surge is present in a woman’s urine. The surge in LH happens up to 48 hours prior to ovulation.
- A positive result lets women know that it is time to coordinate intercourse and their ovulation to increase her chance of becoming pregnant.
Considerations When Using Ovulation Tests
In order to use the tests correctly, urine must be tested for a number of days. For women with regular cycles, targeting the right time frame to start using the tests is easier than for women with irregular cycles. These women may need additional kits as they may need to test for a longer period of time before their LH surge occurs.
Other things to keep in mind include:
- The tests indicate the presence of an increased amount of LH a precursor to ovulation.
- However, the test cannot confirm that an egg was released.
- Women with hormonal issues such as PCOS can have false positive results as their hormones are outside of normal levels
- Ovulation tests are not a replacement for diagnostic testing for fertility problems. If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months consider speaking with a fertility expert.

It’s been 14 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in New York City and Washington D.C. Most of the damage to the air and environment has long since faded. However, people who were exposed to high levels of air pollution during the immediate post-9/11 period may still experience residual health effects a decade out.
Air Quality and Fertility Risks
Studies have shown that people who were exposed to high levels of pollution after 9/11, such as people living in the immediate area and people who volunteered in the relief efforts, are more prone to conditions such as cancer and lung problems. These problems also come with a higher risk of infertility. Although it is impossible to reverse the damage and fertility risks caused by 9/11, there are a variety of steps that people affected by these problems can take to boost their fertility.
Nothing can reverse past exposure to hazardous substances, but living a healthy lifestyle now can optimize your fertility. Eating a healthy, balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and minimizing stress can all help preserve your fertility as much as possible.
Early detection is key to the treatment of all illnesses. Seeing a doctor regularly can help ensure that any emerging problems are caught early on, and are therefore more treatable. People who were exposed to high levels of pollution during 9/11 should be especially vigilant about seeing their doctor regularly, and should talk to their doctor about whether or not any additional screening for illness is necessary. In addition, seeing a doctor early on during the process of trying to conceive can be helpful if you believe that you may be infertile. This is especially important for women who are over the age of 36, who therefore have less time to try to conceive before their fertility continues to decline.
If you do have infertility, there are a number of treatment options available. Your doctor can help you decide which treatment is right for your needs. Treatments include:
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
- In vitro fertilization (IVF)
- Egg or sperm freezing before cancer treatment
- Egg or sperm donation

Naming a child can be a difficult decision. Some intended parents have ideas of baby names before their child is even conceived. Others have trouble narrowing down numerous choices of names.
Most Popular Baby Names
If you’re having trouble finding the right baby name for your child, our tips can help.
There are a number of things to consider when naming a child including:
- Cohesiveness – Consider the entire name together. Say the full name out loud multiple times to ensure that it works well and is easy to say.
- Length – Consider the length of your last name while selecting a first name. Combining a long last name and a long first name can be a cause of frustration, especially for young children.
- Spelling – Carefully consider the spelling of potential names. While spelling a name uniquely is an option, consider the long term issues associated with having a spelling that is outside of the norm.
- Nick Names – If you’re selecting a long name, think carefully about nick names. For example, Jonathan can quickly become Johnny, even if the shortened name is never used at home. Be sure to consider nick names as well as the full name.
- Initials – Verify the first, middle, and last name initials do not spell a word. If they do, make sure the word is acceptable to you.
Name lists, family names, and popular names are great places to start for name ideas.

A winter pregnancy has unique challenges. Pregnant women have to stay warm without overheating, be cautious in treacherous ice and snow conditions, and be careful not to contract seasonal illnesses. The Team of Surrogacy Experts have helpful tips for making winter pregnancy a little bit easier.
Winter Pregnancy Checklist
With dropping temperatures outdoors, there is a need to stay warm. Dressing in layers is one way to increase warmth while being mindful of overheating. If you find yourself sweating or feeling hot, shed a layer or two until you become comfortable. Natural fabrics such as fleece or cotton are the best choices for layering in breathable fabrics. If you’ve outgrown your winter coat, invest in a pregnancy coat. If the expense seems to be too much, try resale shops. A good coat is essential to staying warm during the winter months. Be sure to protect your extremities while out in the cold including your fingers, ears, and toes.
Care for Your Skin
Your skin is your first line of defense against cold temps and illness. Skin care should begin with the soap you use. Look for a moisturizing soap that does not make your skin overly dry. Use a moisturizing cream throughout the day on your hands and any exposed skin. Also, frequently wash your hands to decrease the likelihood of developing the common cold or the flu.
Cold temperatures, a lack of sunlight, and spending more time indoors can start to wear on you over time. Think ahead to warmer weather and to your upcoming bundle of joy. Use the winter months for your baby’s upcoming arrival and to consider things you can prepare during the winter months.
For many women, winter is the busiest season. Take time to relax and to take care of yourself., making sure that you listen to your body. Sleep is especially important to pregnant women and the health of their developing child.

Going through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment can put a strain on a couple’s relationship – especially sexual intimacy. Having sex during IVF treatment can help keep you connected and passionate about your relationship. Sexual relations are allowed and encouraged during IVF treatment – with some caution.
Sex During IVF Treatment
There are stages of IVF treatment when your doctor may recommend you abstain from sex. Your doctor will tell you when and if you should abstain from sex during your IVF treatment.
During Ovarian Stimulation
As part of the IVF procedure, women are administered injectable fertility medications to stimulate their ovaries into producing multiple egg follicles. Sexual intercourse is not discouraged, however, a woman may experience discomfort due to the many egg follicles she is producing in her ovaries. Her ovaries will be very tender and penile penetration may cause pain.
Having unprotected sex during ovarian stimulation can increase the chances of a multiple pregnancy, which is risky for the mother and the baby. If you do have sex during the ovarian stimulation phase of IVF treatment, it is important to use a condom.
Prior to Providing Sperm
Men should not ejaculate for at least 2 days prior to providing a semen specimen during the IVF process. However, men should ejaculate 5 to 6 days prior to abstaining. This method helps to ensure the highest possible sperm count. A sperm specimen is usually provided on the day of egg retrieval.
After Egg Retrieval
Your doctor will probably recommend that you not have sex for a period of time after egg retrieval in order to prevent any medical complications from the surgical procedure.
After Embryo Transfer
Similarly, your doctor may recommend you do not have sex for a certain period of time after the embryo transfer. This is typically not problematic because most couples are not in the mood to have sex after the egg retrieval procedure and the embryo transfer.
Once you have the go-ahead from your doctor, there is no reason to abstain from having sex. There is no evidence that orgasm prevents implantation or causes miscarriage.

Women undergoing winter pregnancies may believe they have it easy due to lower temperatures. The truth is, winter pregnancies pose a unique set of safety factors effecting the health of a developing child.
Safe Winter Pregnancy Advice
Having a safe winter pregnancy ensures you will give birth to a healthy baby.
It’s easy to overlook hydration in the winter because you’re not standing out in the heat. However, winter air can be very dry. This is especially true while the indoor heat is running. Additionally, if you’re dressing in multiple layers and moving between buildings, you can quickly become overheated and begin to sweat. To combat the dehydration, drink water throughout the day. If you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
Exercise is an important component of a health pregnancy. Winter weather can prevent many pregnant women from going outdoors to exercise. It is important not to let winter weather interrupt your exercise regimen. Instead, exercise indoors by doing yoga, walking on a treadmill, or taking a prenatal exercise class.
Watch Your Footwear
Icy conditions and slick walkways are the perfect recipe for a hard fall. In order to have a safe winter pregnancy, ensure that your footwear is right for conditions outside. Winter shoes or boots that allow you to have good traction are a best bet. Also, avoiding carrying heavy items while walking in winter weather. During pregnancy your center or gravity changes making balancing more difficult. Adding heavy items to your load can make a pregnant woman even less stable.
It can be tempting to avoid buying a new jacket for your winter pregnancy due to cost and the short duration of its use. However, staying warm is important for your health. Consider buying a new coat and donating it to a pregnancy resources center after the winter season. In order to save money, consider buying a coat from a second hand store. You’ll be amazed at your finds!

- Instead of eating it with fried chips, try guacamole on tacos, in sandwiches, or in a wrap
Grilled chicken, onions and peppers combine with robust spices in this delicious fajitas recipe from the Food Network Kitchen. You can eat the fajitas on their own for a low-carb meal, or wrap them in warm corn tortillas. Top with low-fat Greek yogurt and topped avocado for extra flavor. Although fajitas take a bit of time to prepare, they are an excellent food for time-pressed pregnant women because the prep work can be done in advance. Laughter is one of the most relaxing and joyful experiences we can have in life. Laughter is essential to a person’s overall mental and physical well being. With World Laugher Day coming up in 2017, it’s a great time to look at the importance of laughter on overall mental health, as well as how you can incorporate more laughter into your life.
Laughter and Mental Health
- Laughter makes you feel good
- Laughter makes you feel good after the moment of laughing
- Laughing regularly increases the amount of resilience, optimism, and joy a person feels
In the midst of a stressful situation or a time of grief, finding a way to laugh can help give you the will to keep going. In times that are more calm, laughing can help you to be joyful. It can shift your perspective and give you a different perspective of viewing your problems.
Remembering to laugh can be especially important for people dealing with infertility. The uncertainty, physical risks, and financial strain of these processes can make it difficult to stay upbeat and connected. Taking steps to foster your own mental health in the midst of a difficult time is essential to your wellbeing.
Fitting More Laughter Into Your Life
Although laughter is spontaneous, you can take steps to increase the amount of laughter in your life. When doing so, remember that laughter is most powerful when shared with others and has an amazing ability to promote social bonding. Some steps you can take to increase the amount of laughter in your life include:
- Watch funny shows or movies – When you watch television or movies, opt for comedies that you enjoy, and invite your partner or a friend to watch with you.
- Laugh at yourself – Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself and share your embarrassing moments.
- Keep reminders to laugh around – Try keeping a funny desktop wallpaper, calendar, or poster in your office or on your computer.
- Try to find the humor in situations – Even in stressful or dark situations, there is often humor to be found. Looking for the humor can help you deal with the situation and give you the perspective you need.
