How to Find a Gestational Surrogate Mother in New Jersey

Intended ParentsNew Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy recently signed a new law – S482 on May 30, 2018. LOOK: New Jersey’s couples struggling with infertility can now enter into an enforceable contract with a woman willing to carry their baby to full term.

Finding a Surrogate Mother

Gestational Surrogacy is facilitated through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) process of creating embryos from the intended mother’s egg and intended father’s sperm in a controlled laboratory setting. Once the embryo has developed in vitro, it is then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus.

Surrogacy Using IVF

Similar to the process involved in IVF using donor eggs, the intended parents and gestational surrogate are thoroughly screened medically and psychologically for optimum matching.

  • In-depth review of medical records
  • In-depth psychological evaluation
  • Physical and medical testing

After she has conceived, the surrogate mother carries the pregnancy to full term. The intended parents are intimately involved throughout the pregnancy and are present at the birth of the baby to assume parenting responsibilities.

Through gestational surrogacy, the surrogate mother has no genetic relationship to the baby. Both intended parents are genetically related to the baby.

Gestational Surrogacy may be achieved in a variety of methods using:

  • Intended mother’s eggs
  • Donor eggs
  • Intended father’s sperm
  • Donor sperm

IVF Procedure

The IVF procedure may be modified with the doctor’s evidence based recommended protocol.

  • Stimulation of the growth and development of multiple egg follicles within the intended mother’s ovaries using fertility drugs (FSH- follicle stimulating hormones), also known as controlled hyperstimulation of the ovaries
  • Monitoring of the growth of the egg follicles through regular ultrasounds and blood tests
  • Surgical removal of matured eggs from the follicles on the ovaries through technique known as aspiration
  • Fertilization of the eggs with the intended father’s sperm in a controlled laboratory setting through a technique known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
  • Embryo culture in vitro for several days – allowing the embryos to grow and develop in the laboratory
  • Transfer of a predetermined number of quality embryos into the uterus of the gestational surrogate using a catheter – similar to that of a Pap smear procedure
  • Progesterone is prescribed daily via suppository to help prepare the gestational surrogate’s uterine lining for implantation of the fertilized egg – the embryo
  • A pregnancy test is scheduled on a date prescribed by the doctor through a blood draw
